The Baroque period began early in the 17th century and continued well into the 18th century. One of the major influences of this period was the trade established with distant lands. Luxurious and exotic items were introduced from the Far East as well as from colonies established by Europe in the Americas and Africa. The Italian Baroque period allowed the cabinet makers to show their ability with highly sculptured pieces of furniture. This was in sharp contrast with the more refined and restrained pieces from the northern countries and France. Baroque, which means “irregular pearl,” was a period when Italian influence on furniture dominated.
